TEXTBOOKS / SUPPLIES:
Recommened texts:
The Chicago Manual of Style. 15th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003. On reserve for this course (Z253 .U69 2003). It is also available for purchase in most bookstores and online sites such as Amazon.com.
Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers. 7th ed. Revised by Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams and Alice Bennett. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2007.
These are the only two style guides approved for assignments in this course without prior permission of the instructor. You should not consult earlier editions of these two works. Use only the most recent editions, cited above. (Music education and music theory majors may wish to consider using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (2001)--please request permission to use this style manual prior to handing in any assignments containing bibliographic citations.)
You will also need a three-ring binder for this course. I will occasionally bring multi-page handouts to class, so I recommend at least a two-inch binder.
Several of the assignments will require you to make photocopies and/or pay-to-print computer printouts, so I recommend that you activate your Buck-ID account. Buck-ID cards work in all OSU Library copiers & printers, and are also accepted at many local restaurants and stores. One can add value to the Buck-ID with a credit card online at www.buckid.com; there are also several deposit sites around campus.
You may also need, and I always recommend (unless you are very skilled at computer manipulation of bibliographic data), approximately 100 5" x 8" index cards, a glue stick, and a pair of scissors for the annotated bibliography, the final project. Do not use cards smaller than 5" x 8", as experience has shown that students need the extra space to write in the annotations and reformat the entries required for the bibliography assignment.
